Visit the site

The Greenwich University Explorer is designed for prospective students to investigate the University campuses and surrounding areas.

Main features for the explorer include keyboard navigation for the menu and the use of SWFAddress for deep linking and browser history - this means users can send direct links to friends or navigate back through the site using their browser back button.

Once the user is fully zoomed into an area they are shown a Google map, which was created using the Google Maps API for Flash AS3. This allows for functionality such as custom markers, keyboard controls (for zooming/panning), polygon drawing (for the campus boundaries) and changing the view mode (for example satellite view).

Markers for the Google map are stored in an external XML file, meaning markers can be added, repositioned or deleted if needed. Each marker uses a custom icon to signify its marker type, and content within the marker popup can contain additional HTML/CSS formatted text. Markers are grouped by category and can be switched on/off using the map legend.
